Pod Point has already proved that a poor reputation does not have to be permanent.
In my work supplying EV chargers, I saw the earlier generation of Pod Point products develop a reputation for faults, a significant failure rate, hardware that faded/bleached in the sun and inconsistent reliability.
But time moves fast in the EV world. The company listened, improved the materials and build quality, and has now produced a much more dependable charger.
At one stage, we might have encountered a couple of faulty units a month. But I can tell you, during the six months before this review, we haven’t received one.
This Pod Point Home Charger review draws on that direct experience to examine what has changed, what I still think needs work and whether EDF ownership makes it a safer long-term purchase.
Let’s start with what you are actually getting for your money:
What are the pricing and purchasing options for the Pod Point Solo 3S?
Before getting into the details, I want to clarify that this review focuses on the 7.4kW single-phase Pod Point Solo 3S sold by Volta EV. It is the fastest Solo 3S model and provides the maximum home charging speed available to most UK properties.
There are three main ways to purchase one. You can buy the charger separately and appoint your own installer, pay Pod Point upfront for a supplied-and-installed package, or spread the cost through the Pod Drive subscription.
As of July 2026, all of these prices are correct.
And yes, Pod Point did drop the ‘Point’ and rebranded just to ‘Pod’ last year, but lots of people still refer to it as Pod Point, at least for now, and so I will do so throughout this article:

Which purchasing option offers the best value?
There is no single cheapest or best option for every customer. When you buy from Volta EV, the charger is included in the price, while Pod Point’s price includes standard installation.
If you are buying through Volta EV, I recommend getting a complete installation quote before comparing the final cost. The independent route may work out cheaper or more expensive depending on your property, the required cable run and whether any additional electrical work is needed.
From my experience supplying installers and electrical wholesalers, buying through an independent installer gives you the greatest control. A qualified installer can assess your property, explain whether the Solo 3S is genuinely suitable, price any non-standard work clearly and compare it with alternatives from other manufacturers. You also retain a direct relationship with the electrician who carries out the work.
That can be particularly valuable if the charger installation forms part of a wider project involving solar panels, a consumer unit upgrade or changes to the property’s electrical supply.
Pod Drive offers a different type of value. It keeps the upfront payment low and gives you one provider to manage the charger, installation and aftercare. At Volta EV, we can offer spread payments of the charger by using Klarna and PayPal pay in 3 or 30 days.

Good to know for wholesalers and installers: Pod Point does not rely solely on selling directly to homeowners. It also works through established distributors and electrical wholesale channels (not eBay shops and random online websites set up yesterday). In my experience, its trade pricing gives distributors and installers enough room to earn a fair margin while still allowing the homeowner to receive a competitively priced product. This keeps the supply chain healthy and encourages experienced businesses to remain willing to stock, recommend and install the chargers. For many customers, buying through a wholesaler is the better option because it provides independent advice, a choice of installer and greater control over the full installation. |
What do I think of the Pod Point Solo 3S’s design, hardware and safety features?

The Pod Point Solo 3S has the following standout safety features:
- PEN fault protection, which means a separate earth rod is not required for a typical installation. This reduces groundwork and makes installations easier and quicker, although the installer must still assess the property and follow current wiring regulations.
- 6mA DC fault detection, which monitors for DC electrical leakage from the vehicle. The charger will disconnect the supply if it detects a fault.
- Auto Power Balancing, which monitors electricity demand across the home. If household consumption approaches the capacity of the main supply, the Solo 3S reduces its charging rate to help prevent an overload.
These features mean the 3S works around a property’s electrical demand rather than competing with it.
My Pod Point EV charger review: What are the Pod Point Solo 3S installation options available?
The Solo 3S can be bought in three different ways, and each option gives you a different installation experience. I’ll explain each one below:
Buy the charger from Volta EV
Buying the Solo 3S from Volta EV gives the installer control over the full job. We supply the charger, while the installer surveys the property, specifies the work and agrees the final installation price directly with the homeowner.
Before quoting, the installer should confirm with their customers:
- The proposed charger position
- The distance from the consumer unit
- The likely cable route
- The condition of the household electrical supply
- Whether an EICR or remedial work is required
- Whether solar panels, battery storage or future upgrades need to be considered
This route works particularly well for installers who want to combine the Solo 3S with other electrical work. It also suits homeowners who already have a trusted electrician or need a more tailored installation than a standard national package may provide.

Buy directly from Pod Point and pay upfront
If you’re a homeowner, then buying directly from Pod Point gives you one provider for the charger, survey and standard installation.
The process starts with a digital pre-survey. The homeowner is usually asked to provide:
- Photographs of the preferred charger location
- Photographs of the fuse box and incoming supply
- The approximate distance between the fuse box and charger
- A video showing the proposed cable route
- A current Electrical Installation Condition Report, or EICR
Pod Point uses this information to decide whether the work qualifies as a standard installation. According to Pod Point, around 90% of installations fall into this category.
A standard installation normally takes just over two hours. The engineer mounts the Solo 3S, completes the electrical connection, commissions the charger and explains how to use it.
The main benefit is convenience. The homeowner does not need to find an electrician or coordinate the survey, installation and aftercare separately.
The limitation is reduced flexibility. A Pod Point installer might not want to work with a homeowner with an unusual cable route, an older consumer unit, solar panels or wider electrical work — and you will still benefit from obtaining a separate quote from an independent installer.
Subscribe through Pod Point’s subscription model, Pod Drive
Pod Drive is designed for homeowners who want to reduce the upfront cost and have the charger, standard installation, and aftercare covered under one agreement.
The installation process follows the same general pattern as Pod Point’s direct upfront route. The customer completes a digital survey, Pod Point checks whether the work is standard, and an engineer completes the installation.
The main benefits for homeowners are:
- A lower initial payment
- The cost spread over three years
- One provider managing the charger and installation
- Ongoing support under the subscription package
- Less responsibility for coordinating different suppliers
Pod Drive offers convenience rather than maximum control. It may suit a homeowner who does not already have an electrician and wants Pod Point to manage the entire process.
It is less likely to suit customers who:
- Want to own and pay for everything upfront
- Already have a preferred installer
- Need other electrical work completed
- Want to compare several charger brands
- Prefer a locally managed installation, quickly, no matter how complex the job
- Want greater freedom over the final specification
The two different routes — working with Pod Point direct or with a third party — have their different benefits. Pod Drive sells convenience and a lower upfront payment. The trade route, on the other hand, offers true flexibility, personal technical advice, and complete control over the installation from start to finish.
What is the Pod Point app like for smart features and daily use?
The Pod Point app is easy to use and covers the smart-charging features most homeowners need. I would recommend it for scheduled off-peak charging, but it's quite limited for customers who want multi-car tracking or a more advanced tariff automation.
Pros and Cons of the Pod Point app
The app is simple and practical rather than highly advanced. And while it does have limitations, these limits will not matter to every homeowner. They are more relevant to multi-EV households, drivers with irregular routines and customers using complex dynamic tariffs.

Good to know: Pod Point’s backing by EDF gives it a massive operational head start in the smart tariff and home-energy space. In fact, I view EDF ownership as Pod Point's single biggest long-term advantage over independent charger manufacturers. While standalone brands must constantly chase cooperation from energy suppliers like Octopus, British Gas, or E.ON to test new tariff features, you can expect Pod Point and EDF to develop and trial integrations directly in-house. This relationship will remove the friction that slows down other hardware brands. While it doesn't guarantee Pod Point will beat everyone to market every single time, owning both the charger and the energy supply puts them in a prime position to dominate as smart tariffs, home-energy management, and bidirectional charging evolve. |
What can the Pod Point 3S do today, and what will it be able to do tomorrow?
Surplus solar integration is the Solo 3S's best feature right now. The Pod Point app gives homeowners two main solar modes:
- Solar Only: This channels excess household solar directly into the EV. This mode is great for reducing grid use, but won't guarantee free charging if it's cloudy or the kettle is on.
- Solar and Grid: This blends solar generation with mains power to keep charging at full speed.
Looking towards the future, I predict that Pod Point's backing by EDF will give them a massive head start in developing vehicle-to-home (V2H) and vehicle-to-grid (V2G) tech. Also known as bidirectional charging.
Bidirectional charging depends on three main parts working together: the vehicle, the charger and the energy supplier. Given that Pod Point and EDF already cover two sides of that relationship, this makes it ripe territory for future testing and integration.
Most home chargers currently send electricity in one direction, from the grid to the car. But bidirectional charging also allows energy stored in the car battery to flow back out. V2H can help power the home, while V2G can export electricity to the national grid, potentially in return for payment.
This is just one of many new software upgrades (and by far the most important) I’m expecting to be announced in the near future.
However, bidirectional charging (V2H/V2G) is not available on the Solo 3S yet. Installers must sell the unit on its current solar features only and never promise future tech upgrades until Pod Point officially launches them.
Is there anything bad about the Pod Point Charger 3S that I should be aware of?
Not really. The Pod Point Charger 3S is very reliable when compared to previous models.
While Pod Point’s first-generation charger did have issues, these seem to have largely been addressed. Plus, in the meantime, they’ve secured a massive relationship with EDF, which, as explained above, will only make their chargers more competitive.
You can only praise a company for listening to the market and making corrective steps like that.
The company’s Trustpilot shows mostly strong reviews, including with customer service, but I do think, for all the positives, customer service could still be improved.
A quick run through some reviews will find that people have questioned Pod’s slow response times and long waits for installation times. And if a job is too difficult for their engineers, they might refuse to do the work — for example, if some work is required in a loft space — in which case a local EV electrician will need to step in.
My Pod Point Solo 3 review verdict: So, who should buy it?
The Solo 3S gets the fundamentals right. It is a dependable, mid-range home charger from an established manufacturer. I would recommend it to EDF customers, homeowners who value long-term support, and installers who want a recognised brand that is straightforward to specify and sell.
Reliability has improved significantly. Earlier Pod Point chargers had a poor reputation for failures and fading, but the newer products use better materials and build quality. In the six months before this review, we had not received a faulty Solo 3S return, although that reflects my experience at Volta EV, I can’t speak for other suppliers.
The app is basic but does the job for most people. It only syncs with one vehicle, lacks a simple boost button and offers limited control for dynamic tariffs. While Pod Point’s customer service can also still be much improved.
Who is the Pod Point Solo 3S best for?
The lure of the Solo 3S is strongest for existing or prospective EDF customers. Its tariff integration can help drivers schedule charging during cheaper periods, while the connection between Pod Point and EDF should support closer energy integration over time.
It also suits buyers who prioritise the stability of the manufacturer. Smaller EV charging brands can enter and leave the market quickly, which creates uncertainty around software support, replacement parts and warranties. EDF ownership makes Pod Point less likely to disappear (although, obviously, no company’s future can be guaranteed).
I would also recommend the Solo 3S for:
- Homeowners who want solar and scheduled charging
- Installers who want a familiar, easy-to-explain product
- Wholesalers looking for a recognised mid-market charger
