Choosing between a tethered and untethered EV charger depends on three main factors: convenience, appearance and how the charger(s) will be used day to day.
For homeowners, installers and wholesalers — customers whom I speak with day in and day out — this is an extremely common question I am asked regularly. The right choice, however, depends on the property, parking layout, charging habits and your or your customer’s preference.

What is the difference between tethered and untethered EV chargers?
A tethered EV charger has a fixed cable. An untethered EV charger has a socket-only design and uses a separate charging cable.
An untethered charger creates one extra step when charging, but it gives the customer more flexibility over cable length, storage and how tidy the installation looks.

Tethered chargers are better for convenience. Untethered chargers are better for flexibility, cable choice and cleaner-looking installations. Especially if you’re thinking of installing in an area with an awkward parking setup.
Please bear in mind that I've written this to the customers I deal with mostly day in and day out, and those are installers and wholesalers, but it should still be a very useful resource for an individual homeowner looking to weigh up pros and cons and choose a model.
Tethered or untethered chargers — Which is best for new builds and individual homeowners?
For most daily home charging, tethered is the easier choice. For front-of-house installs, awkward driveways or occasional charging, untethered often makes more sense.

Installers: Here are some key considerations for charger placement and cable selection
For installers, the big thing is to look at the driveway properly before recommending one or the other. If there are multiple cars on the driveway, a fixed 5m or 7.5m tethered cable may not comfortably reach every parking position.
Some chargers offer longer tethered cables, around 10m, but you still need to think about where the charging port is on the vehicle.
Some EVs charge from the front. Others charge from the rear. Your customer does not want to get home and have to move two cars just so the cable reaches.
That is where a socketed charger can make sense. With an untethered charger, the customer can use a separate cable, and in some cases, that cable can be much longer. If the charger position is awkward, or the car is not always parked in the same place, that extra cable flexibility can be useful.

Many homeowners prefer the convenience of tethered, but in many circumstances, untethered may actually be best for them.

Other common FAQs I get on tethered vs untethered EV chargers
Most of these questions are from homeowners, but worth clearing up anyway:
Q: Are untethered chargers more aesthetic than tethered EV chargers?
The quick answer is yes. Untethered looks cleaner when the charger is on the front of the house but tethered is fine when the charger is hidden away. Some people think it looks a bit messy to have a cable coiled and hanging around on the side of the house.
In my own personal opinion, I use a tethered charger, and this works for me because it's down the side of my house, so the cable is not visible from the side of the road.
However, as I covered above, in some commercial situations you will have no choice but to use tethered.
Q: Which is cheaper: Tethered or untethered EV chargers?
Untethered EV chargers can be cheaper upfront, but tethered chargers can be better value for regular home charging.
An untethered EV charger is usually a socket-only unit, so the charger itself can cost less than a tethered model. But the charger is only one part of the total price. Most drivers still need a separate Type 2 charging cable, and longer cables can increase the final cost.
For an installer working on new builds, untethered can help keep product costs down across multiple plots, especially if the developer wants a clean-looking, socket-only charger on the front of each property. But tethered can reduce user confusion after handover because the resident does not need to source or manage a separate cable.
For commercial AC charging, untethered can be cheaper to own because the site operator is not supplying a fixed cable that can be damaged, misused or stolen (although cables being ‘stolen’ at commercial sites isn’t as common as you might think — more on that below). This matters for hotels, Airbnbs, workplaces, retail parks and shared car parks. For fleet sites or high-turnover charging, tethered can still be better value because faster plug-in routines save time and make charging more consistent.
High-powered DC rapid chargers are different. They are normally tethered by design, so the cost comparison is less relevant.
Also, side note: I don’t like the word ‘cheaper’ or ‘cheapest’ as there are a lot of cowboys in the EV world who promise cheap but then end up costing you more in problems down the line due to poor, badly specified or awkward-to-use set-ups.
Q: If I choose a tethered EV charger, will that put me at risk of my cable being stolen?
No, I don't think so. In my opinion, domestic cable theft is quite rare. It's a bit like leaving a bike on a driveway. If a cable is loose and visible, someone could steal it, I suppose, but I don't imagine there are many people roaming around specifically looking to steal home charger cables.
For commercial charging, true, cable theft is more relevant. This is mainly because thieves assume there is a lot of copper in the larger DC charger cables. But the reward doesn't justify the effort, because after cutting and stealing the cable, you're only left with a few hundred pounds max in scrap anyway.
Anyway, because of this, most commercial AC chargers are not usually tethered in the same way to protect them from cable theft. Higher-powered DC commercial chargers are normally tethered by design, but they are often on protected sites such as motorways or fleet charging stations, which makes theft even less likely.
Q: What connector type is best for me, and what is the difference between a Type 1 and Type 2?
Type 2 and CCS, because there is no other option anymore. This is a common, misplaced question I am asked often, particularly by homeowners.
Most modern UK and European EVs use Type 2 for home charging, while Type 1 and CHAdeMO are now mainly relevant to older vehicles. Some older EVs might still be on legacy models, but about 90% of cars across the UK and Europe are Type 2 and CCS now.
Hybrid models: Can I have an EV charger that can be tethered AND untethered?
Yes. Some socketed EV chargers can lock the cable in place, giving you untethered flexibility with tethered-style convenience.
When I moved house and got another charge point, I chose tethered because I found it easier. With my socketed charger, I kept taking the cable in and out of the car, and eventually I just left the cable locked into the charger anyway. At that point, it was basically functioning like a tethered charger.
My sister had a slightly different setup. She does not have a driveway, but she has a long front garden, so a socketed charger with a separate 10m cable made more sense. She could lock the cable into the charger and effectively create a tethered-style setup, while still having the flexibility of a socketed unit.
That is what I would call the best of both worlds.
Some socketed chargers allow the cable to be locked into the unit through the app. Not every charger has that function, but a fair few do, such as the Easee One and Sync Energy Wallcharger, and it can be really useful. It gives the customer the cleaner look and flexibility of an untethered charger, with some of the day-to-day convenience of a tethered charger.
Conclusion: Should I get a tethered or untethered charger?
Choose a tethered EV charger for everyday convenience, an untethered EV charger for flexibility and a more aesthetic appearance, or a lockable socketed charger if you want the best of both worlds.
Ultimately, the right choice depends on how the charger will be used, where it will be installed, how the vehicle is parked and whether cable reach, kerb appeal or day-to-day ease matters most. Get this right at the start, and home or commercial charging becomes simpler, tidier and easier to manage long term.
